ICD Implantation

What it is

An Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) looks similar to a pacemaker but
has a different job. It is designed to monitor your heart rhythm constantly. If it detects a
dangerously fast or chaotic heartbeat, it sends a "shock" to the heart to reset it to a normal rhythm. It can save the life of someone at risk for sudden cardiac arrest.

Frequently Asked Questions :

  • Patients often describe the shock as a sudden "kick in the chest." While startling, it is over in an instant and means the device has likely saved your life.

  • If you receive a shock, you may need to stop driving for a period of time until your doctor confirms your condition is stable.
