Understanding Heart Block

What it is

Think of your heart has having its own internal electrical wiring system that tells it
when to beat. Heart block is a problem with this electrical system. The electrical signals that travel from the top chambers of your heart (atria) to the bottom chambers (ventricles) get delayed or completely blocked. This can cause your heart to beat too slowly or irregularly.

Types of Heart Block:

  • First-degree: The electrical signal is slowed down slightly as it moves through the heart. This is the mildest form and often causes no symptoms.

  • Second-degree: Some electrical signals do not reach the lower heart chambers. This causes your heart to "skip" beats and can make you feel dizzy or faint.

  • Third-degree (Complete) : No electrical signals reach the lower chambers. The
ventricles beat at their own very slow rate, which is not enough to supply your body with the blood it needs. This is a serious condition.

Common Symptoms:

  • Dizziness or lightheadedness

  • Fainting (syncope)

  • Feeling tired or fatigued all the time

  • Shortness of breath

  • Chest pain
