Pacemaker Implantation
What it is
A pacemaker is a small, battery-operated device that helps your heart beat at a
steady, healthy rate. It is typically used for people whose hearts beat too slowly (bradycardia).
The Procedure:
-
A small incision is made just below the collarbone.
-
One or two thin wires (leads) are guided through a vein into the heart.
-
The small "generator" (the brain of the pacemaker) is tucked into a pocket under the skin and connected to the wires.

Frequently Asked Questions :
Yes. Modern pacemakers are well-shielded. You should keep your cell phone at least 6 inches away from the device (don't put it in a breast pocket), but microwaves are perfectly safe.
Most batteries last between 7 and 12 years. Your doctor will monitor the battery during regular check-ups.
